President Józef Gajewski is dead

With shock we received the message that President of Suwalki City Municipality Józef Gajewski passed away Sunday 25th July during his holiday in Tuscany, Italy. Gajewski was a popular president among the people of Suwalki and he was also a very popular partner within the Innovation Circle Network. Recently he was opening the Suwalki Blues festival 2010 which is one of the practical results from the IC project. He was very engaged in international relations and a very generous host. His engagement and smile will be missed among his international friends. This is a sad day and we send our warm thoughts to Suwalki.

At his home page one can read the following:"Patriotism is the ability to organise mutual help, to build space where everyone feels safe. As a president I will be supporting non-governmental organisations and initiatives – the foundation of civil society."

How will Europe’s recovery plan affect us?

Europe 2020 is the EU’s strategic response to the economic crisis. Ten years ago the Lisbon Agenda set the target that the EU would becomes the world’s leading knowledge economy by 2010. That did not happen. Average growth rates were actually lower than those of global competitors. Then the economic crisis wiped out the growth that had been achieved. Europe 2020 tries to set out the road to follow for the coming decade. Though it says that we must ‘escape the reflex of trying to return to the pre-crisis situation’, its main prescriptions echo those of the Lisbon Agenda with a rhetoric about globalization and innovation. What’s new is that it contains seven ‘flagship initiatives’ to point the way ahead. These are:

Nordic-Baltic Region is a beacon of reform for Europe

The Baltic Development Forum recently had the annual summit in Vilnius. Several prime ministers and other prominent poiticians were present. "The Nordic and Baltic countries provide an eminent example of regional cooperation showing the way ahead in times of crises", states EU Commission President Barroso according to the Norden website. The financial crisis has hit many of the countries around the Baltic Sea hard. The Baltic Development Forum (BDF) 2010 focuses on how regional co-operation can help to solve Europe's challenges. The latest event happened on May 15th. The goal was to gather a lot of people as artist, painting the same motive at the same time. The motive was the yellow house in Uddebo.
New bridge finished

Last week the new bridge between Spydeberg and Askim was finally ready. The bridge which is 300 meter long has a tower at 88 meter and is founded on a 24 meter high column rising from the bottom of river Glomma. The German Bilfinger Berger has carried out the construction works on behalf of the Norwegian state road authorities. The bridge is a part of the larger new E18 motor way project, connecting Oslo and Stockholm. For the towns and settlements in between each new part of the project is a victory itself as the local politicians have been very active in fund raising. Unpopular toll roads are parts of this.
