In the end of year 2008 Jelgava District Council signed the Grant contract with European Commission Delegation in Moldova. This event was the starting point of the project “Capacity strengthening and awareness raisin in Cahul region, Moldova” financed by the European Commission Europe Aid programme.

Jelgava district (rajons) is situated in the Southern part of Latvia, in Zemgale
region, 42 km from the capital Riga.
The population of Jelgava district is 37 thousand inhabitants. The administrative
centre of the district is Jelgava city with 66 thousand inhabitants. It plays an
important role in the history of Latvia and Europe as the former capital of Duchy of
Courland and Semigallia.
A significant part of Jelgava district territory – 57% is occupied by the
agricultural land, which is one of the most fertile in Latvia. 30% of the district
is covered by forests.
