Alta is a municipality in Finnmark county. It has recently passed 18.000 inhabitants and is the fastest growing municipality in Finnmark, and one of 3 cities in Finnmark and Troms which has had a continous growth the last decades. The city is well known for higher education, winter sport and a breath taking nature.

Alta is the only municipality in Finnmark county which has increased population during the last decades. The municipality has now more than 18.000 residents. In 1970 only 11.000 were living there. Simultanously there has been a decrease for the county as a whole. Alta is well known for winter sports, for the famous Alta river and for being the center for higher education in Finnmark.
